Dr. Vivian Wei Cheng

Vivian Wei Cheng is a Patent Attorney of JurisAsia LLC, the Singapore office of Gowling WLG. Vivian is a registered Singapore Patent Agent and a qualified Chinese Patent Agent. She has more than nine years’ experience in the IP and technology field, managing multi-jurisdictional patent drafting and prosecution in innovation-intensive industries such as life sciences and chemistry, focusing on pharmaceuticals, diagnostics, bio-materials especially nanomaterials, battery technology, health, immunology, consumer care products, agriculture and food products, medical devices, and environmental technologies. She also provides business-focused strategic advice on intellectual property (IP) portfolio and risk management, as well as litigation support.
Vivian works closely with a number of national, regional and global companies, universities, and start-ups, to secure, exploit and extract value from IP. She has in-depth understanding of and are highly familiar with the local IP laws of each country that the firm services, especially the greater ASEAN region, China, and across the Indian subcontinent.
Vivian has a PhD Degree in Clinical Medicine Research from Imperial College London, bases on her cutting-edge research on the treatment of auto-immune disease via gene delivery by nanoparticles. She worked as a postdoctoral fellow at the Agency of Science, Technology and Research (ASTAR) Singapore, where she was involved in projects such as macromolecular anticancer therapeutics and antimicrobial materials. She has also worked an in-house role in the technology transfer arm of ASTAR, managing thousands of A*STAR’s patent portfolio and assisting commercialization of the same. Prior to joining JurisAsia LLC, Vivian worked at a large Singapore boutique law firm that focused exclusively on IP.

Experience
- Appointed to the panel of a flagship university and a renowned R&D agency in Singapore. Constantly managed, drafted and prosecuted patents for the client and its start-ups. Successfully obtained granted patents for the clients in various jurisdictions including US, EP, SG, JP, CN, AU, KR, NZ, and the ASEAN countries.
- Acted for a UK technology enterprise in the management of its global patenting and design strategy relating to its cutting-edge technology of environmental control, floorcare, personal care and motor. Filed, prosecuted and successfully obtained granted patents in various jurisdictions in the South East Asia region.
- Assisted a few local start-up biotechnology companies on various matters such as patent drafting and prosecution, patent portfolio management, and provided technical and strategic advice for their innovation protection. Received positive comments from this client as being very responsive, technically strong and clear in the advice given.
- Assisted a large US biotechnology company and its Singapore subsidiaries in patent infringement and validity analysis of its patents in Singapore, worked with patent litigation lawyers to file claims at the court for potential infringement action by a competitor of client, and subsequently successfully settled the case. Provided strategic advice to the client’s patent portfolio such as advising and applying for Patent Term Extension.
- Appointed to the panel of judges for the first-ever Open Innovation Challenge during INTA 2023, providing legal counsel on effective IP strategy to start-ups and scale-ups.
- Participated frequently in seminars and webinars to Chinese and English-speaking clients, such as an exclusive webinar in Mandarin co-hosted by the Guangzhou Intellectual Property Development and Promotion Association, and Guangdong medical valley, China, on topics such as how to develop a winning IP strategy that positions the SMEs for success in the ASEAN and global market.
